Product Development & Innovation Centre (PD&IC) is a Centre of Excellence (CoE) established in December 2014 as a centralized facility to cater for new product / sub-system development requirements of all the SBUs / Units of BEL. With the formation of PD&IC, after phased merger of Central D&E, the 3-tier R&D is re-structured as CRL, PD&IC and SBU / Unit D&Es. PD&IC is involved in design & development of state-of-the-art technology modules and sub-systems through continuous innovation, ensuring high value-addition leading to self-reliance through adaptation of current technologies to bring in new products to address BEL’s business needs. Multi-disciplinary resources in a single location with required infrastructure ensures effective development, avoiding duplication of design and bringing in standardization.
PD&IC is setup in a centralized air-conditioned five-storey building in 26 acre land adjacent to CRL, Bangalore, and can house about 700+ engineers. To support the development activities and work as a self-sufficient design house, major infrastructure for prototyping, testing and design validation, such as EMI/EMC lab, ESS labs, Rate Tables, Clean Rooms, etc are part of the in-house facilities. The other general facilities include a 250 seat Auditorium, multiple conference halls, Canteen, Display halls and Admin offices. To enable the R&D engineers to innovate, PD&IC is equipped with the latest hardware and software tools for design, 3D modeling, verification, documentation, etc.
Development activities started from the new location since end October 2018. PD&IC engineers with various domains of engineering viz. electronics, mechanical, computer science, electrical & optics, collaborate to design, develop, prototype and generate necessary manufacturing documents for modules, products and sub-systems which can be marketed as standalone products or can be used in development of larger systems or system-of-systems by BEL business units.
Product Development & Innovation Centre is formed to achieve the following:
The technology verticals of PD&IC are in the area of:
Further, to provide more emphasis on innovation, eight innovation cells addressing the various technologies have been formed within PD&IC. Apart from this, Centre-Of-Excellences in the area of Radar & Weapon Systems, Communication and Electro-optics & Lasers are under formation within PD&IC.
Thus far PD&IC has filed about 113 patents and presented about 115 technical papers in various conferences and seminars.
Number of people working at PDIC: 271
