Laser based Directed IR Countermeasure (DIRCM) systems provide state-of-the-art operational solution for protecting aerial vehicles from incoming MANPADS. The function of the DIRCM System is to protect the aircraft from heat seeking, shoulder fired, anti-aircraft missiles (MANPADS) that may threaten the take-off, cruising flight and landing of the aircraft. DIRCM systems are based on a shooting of powerful laser beam, which is directed towards the missile, jamming its IR seeker and deflecting it by achieving Optical Break Lock (OBL). It has become evident that DIRCM systems are mandatory requirement for protecting a wide range of platforms. A DIRCM system can counter the existing types of heat seeking MANPADS and has high reliability with excellent performance. The DIRCM system “ammunition” never gets exhausted – it is always ready for operation. Countering of MANPADS by DIRCM will be performed automatically, safely, and efficiently without the intervention of the flight crew.
