Resources and Investments

Presently, BEL’s R&D engineering manpower is in excess of 2600. D&E divisions of BEL pursue various categories of projects:

  • Indigenous (In-house development projects, Joint development or ToT projects with DRDO / Other National Design Agencies)
  • ToT or joint development projects with foreign technology partners.

The revenue generated from products designed and manufactured indigenously is about 80% of the annual revenue. The annual R&D expenditure has consistently been about 6.25 to 7.50 % of BEL’s sales turnover in the past 5 years.

BEL plans to continue investing in R&D for meeting the continuously evolving requirements of its customers as well as for diversi­fication.  BEL will continue to support R&D initiatives for enabling an Atmanirbhar Bharat, making and delivering high-quality defence and professional Electronics Products, Systems and Solutions for India and the world.

BEL regularly recruits young engineers based on the identification of required competencies for the R&D divisions. There are schemes for on-the-job training after placement and facilities for continuous learning for these engineers. There are many recognition and reward schemes for promoting excellence among R&D engineers.

BEL has been pursuing Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) related activities year after year. Concerted efforts put in have resulted in the grant of 161 patents during FY 2023-24. As on 31 March 2024, the IPR data summary is as follows.

BEL R&D scientists/engineers present/publish more than 70 papers every year in reputed Conferences/Seminars/Journals.
