Centre of Excellence (CoE) – COMM

Centre of Excellence – Communication System (CoE-Comm) was formed in May 2021 with strategic reasons to achieve self-sufficiency in generation of business by way of designing and developing state-of-art communication systems and solutions through in-house efforts. CoE Communication is created to attain leadership position in Communication Business Segment of BEL. The establishment of CoE-Comm will also strengthen the existing three-tier R&D structure of BEL by keeping up with changing business landscape to continue on a growth trajectory in a highly competitive and dynamic business scenario by fulfilling the needs of “Atma-Nirbhar Bharat”. 

The CoE-Comm, headed by Chief Technology Officer – Communication (CTO-Comm), primarily focuses on designing and developing futuristic, state-of-the-art systems as well as system of systems. CoE-Com will also work towards bringing out new products, systems and technologies by collaborating with academia or industries interested to work in the area of communication domain. 

CoE-Com is co-located with the Product Development and Innovation Centre (PD&IC) for administrative support for HR, Finance, and Material Management functions.

Core Strengths of CoE-Communication

  • Design and Development of various form factors of Software Defined Radios (SDRs).
  • Design and Development of waveforms and software for Radio Communication equipment’s.
  • Design and Development of hardware for Baseband system for SATCOM requirement.
  • Design and Development of forward & return channel physical layer modem & higher layer software design for Satcom.
  • Design, Development and Integration of Satcom systems.
  • Collaboration with the external agencies e.g. industries, academia, or startups to work with BEL R&D teams for future product/system based technologies.

Role of CoE-Communication:

  • Dedicated team for all Communication product/system and system of system requirements.
  • Drive innovation and improvements through multidisciplinary resources.
  • Implementation & adaption of new technology and develop demo systems to reduce time to market for new skills/technology.
  • System level architecture design
  • Value addition by participation in System/sub-system level design reviews
  • Identification of potential technology partners (in-house/external)
  • Acquiring state-of-the art technology ( global partners)
  • Critical algorithms (IPR related) development assigned to in-house R&D partners
  • Promoting IP re-use within organisation across various Communication system Projects
  • Consultation/collaboration with academia/domain experts
  • System integration coordination with SBU’s/in-house/external development partners
  • Envisage vision for Global foot print in Communication systems technology
  • Create a set of standardized practices/Technology modules that BEL can leverage for communication products/ system.
  • Envisioning potential opportunities in the area of Communication system.
  • Single point of contact for Communication system Solutions.
